Read John 16:25-17:19
"I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world." John 16:33
Peace in a Troubled World
As Jesus prepares His disciples for what lies ahead, He speaks with clarity and tenderness. He tells them plainly that He’s come from the Father and is returning to Him. For a moment, the disciples feel confident: “This makes us believe that you came from God.” (Jn 16:30) Yet Jesus knows their faith will soon be tested. They will scatter. Fear will overtake them. Still, Jesus assures them that He’s never alone – the Father’s with Him (Jn 16:32).
Then come words meant not just for them, but for us: “In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” (Jn 16:33) Jesus does not promise an easy path. He promises something better – peace in Him. This peace does not come from the absence of trouble, but from the presence of, and relationship with, Jesus our glorious Lord and Saviour.
Jesus then turns to prayer. He prays first for His own glorification, not as a grasp for power, but so that eternal life may be given to those the Father has given Him. Eternal life, Jesus says, is not merely endless existence – eternal life is knowing God the Father and His Son Jesus. Restored relationship with God through Jesus is at the heart of salvation – gazing upon their glory in their presence for eternity is true life.
He prays for His disciples with deep love and concern. They remain in the world, a world that will hate them because they belong to Him. Jesus doesn’t ask that they be removed from hardship, but that they be protected, unified, and sanctified by the truth of God’s Word. He prays that they would have a full measure of His joy, by knowing Him through the Spirit, even through opposition.
What comfort this brings. Before the cross, before the suffering, Jesus prays for peace, protection, unity, and joy for His people. He knows trouble will come – but He also knows and secures the outcome.
Today, when life feels overwhelming, remember this: Jesus has overcome the world. You are prayed for, protected by truth, and sent into the world with His presence in you by the Spirit which brings peace in a turbulent world. You are known and loved as one of His precious people. Whatever troubles you face, take heart – Jesus holds you securely. Seek Jesus with all you have and all you are – this is life and peace.
