Promises

If you have been to a Christian funeral the odds are you have heard these beautiful and hopeful verses before. They have been the comfort of countless grieving Christians throughout history. Jesus’ confident promise assures the follower of Jesus that even when things look bleak (as they did for the disciples), our destiny, our destination, our eternity is secure. For the christian, death is the arrival back home. Jesus himself has prepared it, he is there now.

The keen reader will have seen that the title was a plural, promiseS. Jesus promises to give us what we need in life as well as death. Our advocate (vs16), our help (16), the spirit of truth (17). Elsewhere God’s Spirit is called our guarantee. With the help of God’s Spirit we can keep His commands, we can know truth, we know God will be with us through this life, as well as the next.

Good promises in life and death – given by the one whose life and death shows us the promises can be trusted.

Praise God for chapters such as John 14.

Mitch
