True Security

We all want security, and we think we have it … right up until we don’t. If our security is in possessions we will be let down. Fires, accidents, markets, thieves, time, all take their toll. Even if they don’t, stuff doesn’t give the security we need. If our security is found in relationships or work, we will likewise be found wanting.

Jesus, having shared that he is the good shepherd, goes on to show that the only real safe and secure place, is with himself.

The pharisees, in contrast, desire political security, they don’t want anyone or anything to take their position or question their authority. They just want security for themselves. Jesus gives security to others. Only He can offer and deliver eternal security to you. Read the comforting words of verse 28.

‘I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one will snatch them out of my hand.’

Jesus claims to give something only God can give, and the Pharisees respond. They get ready to stone Jesus for blasphemy (vs 33). Even then, Jesus is in complete control. He is not truly threatened here. Nor is he threatened when he goes to the cross. Rather, his resurrection will show the security he offers is real!

Jesus holds the keys to life and death. He will prove this in the very next chapter.

And all the while, even as the pharisees plot and feel threatened, more people meet Jesus and are saved. The chapter ends with many people coming to see Jesus. When they do they say

41 Though John never performed a sign, all that John said about this man was true.” And in that place many believed in Jesus.

Are you putting your trust in something cannot save you? Are you giving your time, energy, money, efforts, mind, strength, to things you shouldn’t?

Listen to Jesus and follow his voice. Live under grace rather than law. Do so, and you will find green pastures, an eternal security.
