Read John 7:45-8:20
"When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life" John 8:12
In June in Sydney is lit for Vivid Festival. Even when there’s a big historic event we like to light up the Opera House. A light show captures our attention and imagination. Did you know that Jerusalem was doing vivid in Jesus’ day?
At he conclusion of the festival of Booths (Tabernacles) there is a final ceremony. The “Illumination of the Temple” ceremony involved lighting four large candelabra in the Court of the Women, which cast a brilliant light across the city. It’s here that Jesus claims to be the “light of the world” and promises that those who follow him will have true life (8:12).
John 8-10 includes some of the most intense dialogue in the Gospels. Jesus calls the Pharisees “sons of Satan” who “kill, steal and destroy.” In return, they accuse Jesus twice of being possessed by a demon, bring up his mother’s questionable pregnancy, wonder if he will commit suicide, and try to arrest him. What sparks these fiery accusations? Jesus’ claims about himself—the Bread of Heaven …the living water and now, Light of the World. We’ a’re reminded of John’s introduction to the gospel—the darkness has not overcome the light.
In ch8 a woman caught in adultery is brought before Jesus. The Jews are ready to stone her. How will Jesus respond? As he always does, as light. “whoever is without sin let him cast the first stone”. Her accusers slink away. The light turns to the woman and says ‘go and sin no more’. In that moment the light has fallen around her as truth and grace—truth (stop sinning) and grace (you are forgiven).
In what ways has Jesus’ light fallen on you?
